A Difficult Bend in the Road

One year ago I stared in the eyes of the one of the darkest periods of my life.

It was the perfect storm of financial, career and family crisis. It had been years in the making. An enemy lurking on the horizon.

Many issues that had been delayed, postponed and dealt with for too long with eyes closed hoping they would go away rose to the forefront and demanded to be confronted.

The skies were falling and the bleakness of hopelessness was as thick as coastal fog.

“Could this really be happening to us? Why do things seem so unfair?”

Like Crack For Christians

It’s like crack for Christians.

When I produced my series of anti-meth documentaries called Crystal Darkness years ago I interviewed literally hundreds of recovering and current addicts. These were people who had allowed the drug to take them to the lowest of lows.

I spoke to men who had murdered others, boys who traded their bodies on the street and women who had sold their children to molesters to pay for their next fix. Yes…that depth of evil. In many instances these were people who were raised in good homes, were 4.0 students and productive members of society. The fall came quick.

Breathe

Living life at the speed of sound? Experiencing the full tug of the merry-go-round as your fingers lose their grip?

Do you believe if you could only go a little faster, find a little more time, lift a little harder or stretch a little farther…it will all work out? Really? How is that working for you?

Here’s a simple piece of advice:

Breathe.

Did you know God provides us with about 17,280 breaths each day? For the most part we need each and every one of them. They are a gift we often take for granted, among so many we receive daily.

Autographed Novel Giveaway for Fans of the Heirs of Ireland Series

I have three special Advanced Reader Copies of the concluding novel of my Heirs of Ireland Series and I want to get them in the hands of my most dedicated fans. You’ll get to read Songs of the Shenandoah two months before it officially releases this January 1st!

The Heirs of Ireland Series is the fictional tale of Irish immigration in the 19th century. It all began with Flight of the Earls, the story of the great Irish potato famine in the 1840′s and historic New York City and continued with In Golden Splendor, set during the California Gold Rush. Now the epic saga of the Hanley family concludes dramatically during the Civil War Era with Songs of the Shenandoah.

The Dumbest Thing You Can Say To Your Wife

“Woman, you will never change me!”

Fist clenched to the heavens, jaw tightened in a grimace; this has sadly been too frequent of a philosophy or refrain from we husbands through the years.

It’s a stance fueled by idiotic conversations with buddies at sports bars, unfair caricatures of women as overbearing and shameful rantings of popular culture.

But regardless of its origins, this sentiment is among the most foolish and wasteful for a husband to embrace and invariably allows him to create his own monster.

That is, a crabby, cantankerous and ultimately lonely man.

Is This The Most Important Button A Christian Should Push?

We’ve all experienced the sinking feeling.

It happens in the same instance our fingertip strokes the “send” button and off into the World Wide Web goes our vitriol-laced diatribe on all of the perceived injustices and indignities caused by an about-to-be mortified recipient.

And then, almost instantly, the blood drains from our face, and we’re overwhelmed with the realization of the permanency and foolishness of our e-mail.

What have I done!

OMG. Even A Teenager Could Tell You THIS About Your Faith

I am struggling to grow up.

This disheartening realization followed a conversation I had with one of my teenage daughters.

Daughter: Dad, you’re looking good today.
Me: What?
Daughter: That shirt. It’s like…the bomb.
Me: This plaid one I got at Costco for ten bucks? I thought you said it was as embarrassing as my farmer’s tan?
Daughter: I know. Maybe it’s just like…you know…that you lost some weight.
Me: Oh. Well, thank you. I guess?
Daughter: Hey Dad.
Me: Yes?
Daughter: Do you think I could have a sleepover with my friend tonight?

How God Goes About Fixing All Your Problems

Is your marriage suffering from leaking pipes? Your career shooting sparks? Your finances displaying a noticeable limp? Your spiritual life broken down at the side of the road?

There is no better “911″ call than prayer with God, and it’s a number which is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But do you sometimes worry whether the ambulance will ever arrive?

Most of us are good about asking God for help with our life challenges. Unfortunately, we frequently approach it as if we’re ordering through a drive-through window at a fast food restaurant.

The Simple Secret to Powerful Prayer

How is your prayer life?

For most Christians, our first reaction to this inquiry is a palpable twinge of guilt.  Then this is typically followed by some type of quantitative response. Something like: “Well, I should be praying much more often.”

But what about the quality of our prayer life? Is there such a thing? And if so, how do we measure that?

Try answering this question:

How many times do we pray for opportunities to share Jesus BEFORE requests to improve our health, finances or family situation?
