Do Muscles Make You Weak?

Who wants to be weak?

We work out. Lift weights. Stick up for ourselves. Strive to be healthy. Lift ourselves up from our own bootstraps. Develop skills. Get educated. Labor like crazy to build up our financial portfolios, advance our careers and improve our standing in the world.

So what’s wrong with this?

Nothing, of course. Unless in the process of getting stronger, we forget the source of all strength.

During the time of Habakkuk (one of the most neglected books of the Bible), the Babylonians were considered by far the most favored nation of their age. They were a people of tremendous wealth, culture and military might.

The Evil of Applesauce?

Most Christians understand the concept of Good versus Evil. The story of Adam and Eve was one we easily grasped even in our early days of Sunday School.

The lesson was simple: You trust the serpent over God and you’re going to suffer. The image of Eve biting into that apple in defiance of her Maker is almost self-evident in its meaning.

For most of us Believers, the concept of avoiding “big sins” is elementary enough for us to grasp.

Adultery…Murder…Stealing…

The Healing Power of Rain

I fought the lawn and the lawn won.

This is a popular refrain of mine each Summer as I engage in my annually recurring epic battle of man versus blade in my yard.

If you really want to see my beloved wife do a full eye roll, you merely need to ask her about my lawn.

“Oh dear, don’t get me started,” you might hear her say.

A Difficult Bend in the Road

One year ago I stared in the eyes of the one of the darkest periods of my life.

It was the perfect storm of financial, career and family crisis. It had been years in the making. An enemy lurking on the horizon.

Many issues that had been delayed, postponed and dealt with for too long with eyes closed hoping they would go away rose to the forefront and demanded to be confronted.

The skies were falling and the bleakness of hopelessness was as thick as coastal fog.

“Could this really be happening to us? Why do things seem so unfair?”

Like Crack For Christians

It’s like crack for Christians.

When I produced my series of anti-meth documentaries called Crystal Darkness years ago I interviewed literally hundreds of recovering and current addicts. These were people who had allowed the drug to take them to the lowest of lows.

I spoke to men who had murdered others, boys who traded their bodies on the street and women who had sold their children to molesters to pay for their next fix. Yes…that depth of evil. In many instances these were people who were raised in good homes, were 4.0 students and productive members of society. The fall came quick.

Breathe

Living life at the speed of sound? Experiencing the full tug of the merry-go-round as your fingers lose their grip?

Do you believe if you could only go a little faster, find a little more time, lift a little harder or stretch a little farther…it will all work out? Really? How is that working for you?

Here’s a simple piece of advice:

Breathe.

Did you know God provides us with about 17,280 breaths each day? For the most part we need each and every one of them. They are a gift we often take for granted, among so many we receive daily.

Now the epic saga of the Hanley family concludes dramatically during the Civil War Era with Songs of the Shenandoah.

The Dumbest Thing You Can Say To Your Wife

“Woman, you will never change me!”

Fist clenched to the heavens, jaw tightened in a grimace; this has sadly been too frequent of a philosophy or refrain from we husbands through the years.

It’s a stance fueled by idiotic conversations with buddies at sports bars, unfair caricatures of women as overbearing and shameful rantings of popular culture.

But regardless of its origins, this sentiment is among the most foolish and wasteful for a husband to embrace and invariably allows him to create his own monster.

That is, a crabby, cantankerous and ultimately lonely man.

Is This The Most Important Button A Christian Should Push?

We’ve all experienced the sinking feeling.

It happens in the same instance our fingertip strokes the “send” button and off into the World Wide Web goes our vitriol-laced diatribe on all of the perceived injustices and indignities caused by an about-to-be mortified recipient.

And then, almost instantly, the blood drains from our face, and we’re overwhelmed with the realization of the permanency and foolishness of our e-mail.

What have I done!

OMG. Even A Teenager Could Tell You THIS About Your Faith

I am struggling to grow up.

This disheartening realization followed a conversation I had with one of my teenage daughters.

Daughter: Dad, you’re looking good today.
Me: What?
Daughter: That shirt. It’s like…the bomb.
Me: This plaid one I got at Costco for ten bucks? I thought you said it was as embarrassing as my farmer’s tan?
Daughter: I know. Maybe it’s just like…you know…that you lost some weight.
Me: Oh. Well, thank you. I guess?
Daughter: Hey Dad.
Me: Yes?
Daughter: Do you think I could have a sleepover with my friend tonight?
